Our Curriculum Intent - what do we want pupils to know and be able to do?

At Shooters Grove Primary School our curriculum aims to provide opportunities for all of our children to develop their curiosity, creativity and confidence so that they will become successful lifelong learners, who make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society. Within a happy, safe and caring environment we promote and celebrate imaginative thought, belief in one’s own ability and high achievement in order that every child is equipped for life in our ever-changing world.

At Shooters Grove, we want to challenge all children to reach or exceed national expectations, to fulfil their early promise and achieve their full potential.

Our curriculum is broad, rich and balanced. It is inclusive so that all of our children within the school community, regardless of ability and previous learning experiences can achieve. It is designed so our children will be inspired and engaged. We want them to continually build on a full range of appropriately levelled and progressive skills and knowledge that will transfer across the different subject areas. We want them to recognise and value the distinctive nature of each subject yet recognise and take advantage of the links within topics This will ensure our children develop an awareness of the complex world around them and their place within it.

Our Curriculum Implementation - how do we consider the content and teaching sequence in each subject?

Lessons at Shooters Grove are characterised by strong and inclusive Quality First Teaching. They have clear, shared objectives and demand a high level of child engagement. There is an expectation that children will develop resilience and accept responsibility for their own learning. Children will not be limited by the activities and will be encouraged to aim high. Collaborative learning methodologies, Learning without Limit approaches and quality AFL techniques are embedded. The vast majority of children will work at age related standards – those below ARE will have appropriate scaffolds/support to access the objectives. All children will have access to activities that will deepen their learning and be able to apply this to new contexts.

At Shooters Grove we plan our English, mathematics, science, music, P.E., R.E., Spanish and PSHE as discreet subjects while the other foundation subjects are taught within four 10 week topics which take historical and geographical themes as their starting points. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils and their understanding of the core values of our society are woven through the curriculum. Planning is developed in collaborative year group teams supported by subject leaders, who ensure coverage of national curriculum content and rapid progression of appropriate skills using their own knowledge and a variety of planning guidance documents and commercial schemes. A designated member of the SLT monitors the long term planning to ensure NC coverage .

Individuals and groups who are not making sufficient progress are identified early. Provision for intervention is mapped according to need. Detailed plans are put into place and the interventions carried out. Intervention effectiveness is evaluated regularly and the relevant adjustments to provision made. For the vast majority of the time children are taught in mixed ability classes. Classrooms are inclusive and support children with specific difficulties. Displays are a mixture of celebration of children’s work and supportive resources.

Our curriculum is designed not only to cover the National Curriculum but also to embrace our locality and the wider world. Where ever possible visits, visitors and other enrichment activities underpin the children’s learning – we aim to ensure every topic ends with a Fabulous Finish. Pupils have opportunities to share their learning with each other, their parents and carers and other learners through assemblies, performances, celebrations of work, competitions and events involving other schools, especially those in the locality.

Day to day, periodic and transitional assessments are used effectively by teachers to allow children to make good progress and close attainment gaps. Pupil progress meetings allow senior leaders to monitor progress and achievement. Relevant data is kept on the Schools TRACKER+ system using Point in Time Assessment Grades to allow teachers, subject leaders and senior leaders to monitor progress against national age-related expectations.

The school offers a range of after school groups and sports activities which further enhance and extends the curriculum. We also run our own breakfast and after school clubs to ensure the extended provision is tailored to the needs of our community.

The children will leave our school having made positive progress within their academic development and where appropriate will have achieved at least age related expectation.

Our curriculum impact - How well are our pupils learning the content within our curriculum?

Our broad and balanced curriculum is designed to:

Develop our children’s knowledge and understanding

We aim to ensure that our children’s attainment in core and foundation subjects is in line with or exceeding their age related expectations when we consider the varied starting points of children. We measure this carefully using a range of strategies, but always considering the various starting points of the children. We intend that the children will be academically and physically prepared for the next phase of their education.

Improve children’s behaviours and habits so they become effective learners

Our children will develop the ability to approach new challenges with confidence. This could be on the playground, in a game or disagreement, or in class in a complex learning challenge.

The impact should be that children show resilience, are highly motivated to succeed and achieve and are equipped with all the personal skills to do this.

Grow the character of our children

Our learners will have fully rounded characters with a clear understanding of complex values including, among others, equality, friendship, right and wrong and trust. They will also be resilient to the influence of others.

We measure this not just by the work our children produce, but in the behaviours we see each and every day in all children on the playground, in the corridor, and in the many roles we give them. The impact of this is seen in the daily interaction of all members of our school community.
