The PE Curriculum

Here at Shooters Grove Primary School PE is valued as an important part of every child's education. We endeavour to teach children the basic fundamentals of movement and introduce them to 'competition' during KS1 before focusing on sporting skills, strategy and collaboration as they move through KS2. PE also teaches children more transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and an awareness of physical and mental health and well being.

Every child has the opportunity to participate in two gymnastic and dance units each year as well as one outdoor and adventurous activity. These are complimented by a range of sports and games that feed into after school clubs and level 2 competition against other schools in our locality. Our forward planning and use of the Get Set 4 PE scheme, ensures progression across year groups, differentiation within lessons and  that all children will have a range of sporting experiences whilst at Shooters Grove. We also advertise and inform children within school about pathways to further competition and local clubs.

PE and Sport Premium

In 2013 the government announced that it was to provide additional funding of £150 million per annum to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools in England – The Primary PE and Sport Premium. However, in October 2017, the Department for Education published new guidance on the doubled Primary PE and Sport Premium grant. This scheme is to be continued until at least 2025-26 and the aims for doubling the School Sports Premium can be found here:

School Swimming

In Year 4 all children attend an 18 week block of swimming with their class and teacher. In 2025, by the end of Year 6...

  • 52% of pupils could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • 57% of pupils could use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke].
  • 98% of pupils could perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

How Have We Spent Our Sports Premium 2024-25?

For the 2024-25 academic year we received a total of £19,090 of Sports Premium funding plus £10,614 carried forward from the previous academic year. This has enabled us to continue to employ a full time specialist sports coach through the Arches School Sports Partnership, continue our membership within the Forge Valley cluster of schools which promotes inclusion and opportunity and provide more after school clus for more children across both key stages. We have also invested in PE equipment and outside provision that will benefit the whole of the school and allow us to deliver quality PE lessons and improve our physical activity provision.

A full breakdown of how the PE and sport premium was spent in 2024-25 can be found in the file below.
