Young Carers

What is a young carer?

A young carer is a child or young person, aged under 25, who provides substantial unpaid care for one or more relatives who have a physical or learning disability/SEND; long-term physical illness; a mental health condition and/or substance misuse issues. This can be a parent, a grandparent, a sibling, or another family member. They may be taking on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that an adult would normally take on. (Sheffield young carers definition)

In Sheffield it is recognised that 1 in 12 children are currently taking on an active caring role within their home.

As a school we celebrate and support all children who are young carers. We do this by:

  • Recognising young carers in school

  • High staff awareness of young carers through training.

  • We have a Young Carers lead and senior lead within our staffing team

  • Assemblies to explain and educate what a young carer is.

  • 1-1 support for young carers with the young carer lead.

  • A young carers group who participae in fun activities/opportunities within school.
